A Long Road Home... Print E-mail

Today we leave for our long trip home. These trans-Pacific flights are never easy and this time will be no different. We may not leave till a comfortable time in the afternoon but that gets us to Los Angeles almost 6 hours before our next flight which leaves at around 2 am Central time (midnight Pacific time). So, after being in transit for over 12 hours total (includes the drive to the airport, flight to LA and the layover), we get to fly for 14 hours straight! Then we still have to catch one more plane before we get a night in Brisbane! This all wouldn't be so bad... except we are just now getting our internal clocks switched. We'll let you know when we get there!

A few days after my dad's funeral the pastor of a supporting church here in town called... he wanted to know if they could take us out to lunch. Sure! He also mentioned that the church wanted to help us out with our expenses. Great! He asked if I happened to know what the final price of the plane tickets was and I told him I didn't have an exact amount but told him what I thought it would be...

How does crossing the Pacific knock a computer offline? I still have no idea but it happened to me! When we got to CLTC we had to change a few settings to get on the internet. When we got as far as Port Moresby (the capital) I changed them back and happily updated the website (see Day One Complete under the news menu). Then I got to the USA...

I love being a teacher in Papua New Guinea... it's got to be the greatest job in the world, but as a missionaries we do miss some things. Special events and holidays top the list and those times can be hard and lonely. However, this year God has given us a special gift: to be with my mom on Mother's Day. There is a bitterness because my father is gone, but there is a beauty in the timing. My father gave many gifts - both tangible and intangible - so it is fitting that God would use his passing to give us one more.

Poor Michelle... ever since our first term in PNG it seems like she experiences another health problem. She came back from our second term with vision problems that she's had to learn to live with. Our third term was marred by fibromyalgia and even while on our last home assignment she lost her hearing in her left ear. Shortly after we got back this term her right ankle began to hurt. She tried to keep off of it hoping it would heal but it got worse. So, after four months of this, she went to a nearby hospital to have it looked at...
