The King Makes the Way for His Servants Print E-mail

In the first divine reversal, the King and Creator of the universe planted a garden for the pleasure of his servants. They were to tend it and they could eat of every tree but one. Additionally, if a king was to travel, his servants and subjects would go out and prepare the road for his arrival. We are frequently asked how we are feeling as we leave for PNG. Are we excited? Very! We are looking forward to being back in PNG. Even though our specific location changes, the country is still our home. Furthermore, it is where God wants to use us, and that's fun (especially teaching!). But that is not the only emotion we feel because Granbury, Texas is also our home. God has placed us in a church in which we can serve. We have friends here - more than ever, it seems. A one-year supply of medication paid for up front: $700. One night for three in a hotel in PNG: $400. Travel once we get to PNG: $700. These are just the major expenses that we already know about. What are not included are the myriad of minor expenses we can only guess at which will add up very quickly. Travel in the US is expensive. Travel in conjunction with a move is even more expensive here. But, international travel in conjunction with an international move... Oh, my!

We've found that one of the least expensive ways to have a reliable car while here in the States is to buy a used vehicle that is no more than five years old. That way we can take out a 60-month loan so we have a low monthly payment. While we are here we take good care of the car, and when we leave the country, we sell the car and pay off the loan. It is kind of like getting a car on a low-cost no-limit lease. However, we have to pay off the loan...!

It would be very easy to view the whole financial side of missions as something that is unsavory and something that must simply be endured. Paul, however, took a different stance (2 Cor. 9:6ff). He saw giving as something that would result in the face of God being turned towards the giver (see my post on "Blessing"). In my own life I know that this blessing refers, at least in part, to the joy of seeing God take my meager gift and do something amazing with it....

This signifies more than just the publishing of a domain on the web. It is the official beginning of a coordinated training program under a new name, and the foundation upon which a larger institution can be built. When we return to Papua New Guinea, this is school at which I will be teaching: Pacific Institute of Languages, Arts and Translation (PILAT)....
